Why Kilimanjaro?
If you have made it this far into into the site and don’t understand why I am offering this trip, it might not be for you.
Kilimanjaro is likely on the bucket list for many hikers or anyone who love a challenge and deep sense of accomplishment and awe when you reach a summit that you have been dreaming about for years. Yes, this will be a struggle for most of us but that simply adds to the reward and makes the comforts of everyday life more special after a few nights in high altitude tents.
This 38 mile hike will pass through 5 distinct climate zones over 7 days with views that take your breath away not simply due to altitude.
If you are ready to sign up for this once in a lifetime trip or need the details scroll down for all the info. If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out through email lydia@myadventuregang.com
September 14th to 22nd or 24th 2027
Kilimanjaro & The Serengeti!
Are you ready for adventure?
Our Itinerary
Sept 14 - Arrive at JRO airport and transfer to our accommodations for the first afternoon where we will have gear checks and a debrief with our guides along with a group dinner where we get to know each other a little. Many international flights might land in the evening before. We can help organize accommodations if you are arriving early. It is probably a good idea to add a little extra wiggle room in case flights are delayed.
Sept 15 - LET THE ADVENTURE BEGIN!
Hit the trail at the Machame Gate to Machame CampAfter breakfast at your hotel, our vehicle will pick you up for the drive to the trailhead at Machame Gate. Your trek today winds through the rainforest and up the ridge to where you’ll spend your first night on the mountain at Machame Camp. (3,026m / 9,927ft)Distance: 5 to 6 hours, 11 km, 1220m elevation gain
Sept 16 - Hike the ridge to Shira Camp
Today the scenery we trek through will only get more impressive the higher you climb. As the rain forest recedes, you’ll climb the dramatic ridge to Shira Plateau where you’ll be camping for the night. (3,766m / 12,355ft)Distance: 4 to 5 hours, 5 km, 800m elevation gain
Sept 17 - Trek past the Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
This morning will be a strenuous trek to the Lava Tower. You can even climb this 100m volcanic plug, otherwise known as “Shark Tooth”. After lunch, you’ll get a break from the higher altitude as you descend into Barranco Valley. Enjoy the fantastic view of Mount Kibo and the southern glaciers from tonight’s resting place at Barranco Camp. (3,983m / 13,067ft)Distance: 5 to 6 hours, 10 km, 863m of ascent, 646m of descent
Sept 18 - Climb the Barranco Wall and descend to Karanga Camp
Yesterday you caught sight of the impressive Barranco Wall, and today you will climb over it! Not to worry, you don’t need any technical climbing skills to reach the top. Although you may need to use your hands for balance in some sections, it just takes determination and your feet to reach the top. Enjoy the view, then you’ll be hiking back down the valley to Karanga (3,983m / 13,067ft)Distance: 3 to 4 hours, 5 km, 846m of ascent, 655m of descent
Sept 19 - Trek to Barafu Camp
Today will be a shorter day on the trail through the somewhat desolate volcanic desert. You may find the effects of the altitude making the day more challenging as you get acclimatized. Rest well tonight at Barafu Camp, as you’ll have a very early wake up call! (4,550m / 14,928ft)Distance: 3 to 4 hours, 4 km, 650m of ascent
Sept 20 - Stella Point sunrise and final ascent to summit - Descend to Mweka Camp
You’ll want to wear your headlamp when you hit the trail sometime around midnight this morning. The early start ensures you’ll arrive at Stella Point for an incredible sunrise. The elevation and tricky footing through heavy scree and snow on the last stretch of your ascent will all be a challenge, but it’ll be worth it soon. When you reach the top of Uhuru Peak you’ll have earned the breathtaking view from the highest point in all of Africa! This afternoon you’ll be hiking back down to a much more comfortable altitude to spend the night at Mweka Camp.(3,110m / 10,203ft)Distance: 10 to 13 hours, 18km, 1,195m of ascent, 2,805m of descent
Sept 21 - Descend to Mweka Gate and back to Moshi
Today is your last day on the mountain as you trek down back into the warmer rainforest climate. You’ll be met by the Gladys Adventure driver who will transport you back to our office. Here you will be presented with your climb certificate and we will say a BIG thank you (and tip) to our fabulous guides and porters who made the trip possible. Distance: 3 to 4 hours, 10km, 1410m of descent. We will head back to Moshi for one final group dinner and a little relaxation
Sept 22 - Our trek is over but we accomplished so much and have a wonderful crew of new friends! We will have one last breakfast together as a group before either heading off to the airport or embarking on safari.
Optional Safari Add-On
Sept 22 - If you book the safari option, we will head out after an early breakfast driving 3-4 hours to Tarangire National Park. Once we arrive we will jump right into on a game drive within the park. The Tarangire River acts as the sole water source during the dry season, attracting a high concentration of wildlife, notably large herds of elephants and giraffes, amidst the distinctive baobab trees.
Sept 23 - After breakfast we will have a morning game drive in Tarangire National Park. In the afternoon, we will depart Tarangire and travel to the nearby village of Mto wa Mbu for a walking cultural tour. In the late afternoon, we will journey to Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Sept 24 - After breakfast, we will descend into the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will have a 4 to 5-hour game drive on the crater floor, known for its incredible animal density and biodiversity. In the afternoon, we will leave the crater floor and begin the drive back to Moshi/Arusha, or Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO). You can arrive at the airport by 3:00pm if flying out after 6:00pm or stay another night and fly home on the 25th.

Do I need to be in great shape?
Yes, for this trip you should be training regularly for the months leading up to the trip, not just the few weeks prior. You do not need to be an expert backpacker or hiker in order to summit Kilimanjaro. Most of our gear will be carried by porters who will also set up and breakdown camps and cook excellent meals every day. We will hike slowly to adjust to the rapid elevation changes but a good baseline of cardiovascular fitness is required.
What if I sign up now and can’t come?
Things happen all the time, I get it. While I can not offer immediate refunds or cancellations, I will make every effort to resell your spot on the trip and have the new attendee pay you directly. Please purchase travel insurance that includes a “cancel for any reason” clause if you think something could come up. I have used this travel insurance for years and highly recommend them. If unforeseen circumstances arise and the trip needs to be canceled, I will issue refunds or reschedule the trip for 2028.
Do I have to pay all at once?
Nope! There are now payment plans available at check out!
Do I need to book with a friend or can I come by myself?
Book with a friend or book alone, either way the most important thing is to show up as you are! One of the awesome benefits to joining a group trip like this is the opportunity to make new friends. You are welcome to book with a friend if you the stars align and you both want in on this trip but it isn’t necessary. If you and a friend or two want to tent together that is excellent. Let me know so you can room together.
I can’t make this trip, when is the next one?
I am working on it! I am actively plotting new trips all the time. Let me know where you want to go and what you want to do on a My Adventure Girl Gang trip! Send me a message with your suggestions and requests so I can start planning. Don’t forget to sign up for my email list to be the first ones notified when a trip launches.
Can I join just the safari?
Not this time. The safari portion is only an add-on available for women who are on the Kilimanjaro trek. Maybe another time we can go on a full safari trip!
